My flesh takes on other flesh and tries to see
what colors two bodies can make.

Blues and greens. Oranges. All the colors
of volcano rain.

When my mouth forgets how to language, I sentence
with my hands. I curve my body just so, knowing that
you’re staring at my neck, knowing so well how people love
to lose themselves in skin.

This morning I woke after dreaming of train tracks covered in
yellow flowers, looked at the man sleeping beside me, and left
my bed to count the ways that you can leave your soul through
touch.

There is a tenderness in closing your eyes and seeing
explosions, in the fact that we loved each other for so long without
touching, in the fact that there is such a thing as souls brushing
underneath the table instead of this: the night, josie’s bar,
your beautiful hand crawling too high up my thigh.

When I close my eyes I see light. When I open them,
I see men and women in their black coats, walking dreamily
and dreamlessly, closing their eyes through the traffic
and writing dirty poems on used napkins.

Drills press themselves into the flesh of concrete. Tires
pull at gravel. On windy days, even the buildings move their hips
and hope love will come of it; but

when I talk about our flesh, I don’t mean this flesh. I don’t mean
muscles or Château-Briand or you fucking me underneath the
blankets. I don’t mean bones. I don’t mean skin. I don’t
mean any of that new-aged bullshit.

All I want is to be held, softly, by your gaze. All I want is
for my words to be touched, gently, as if you never wanted to read
anyone else’s words
again.

The story of how my parents first met
is one I never ask to hear. My dad likes
to tell it anyway. He prides himself on
his marriage to my mother. Says that of
all his accomplishments in his life so far,
that’s the one that matters most. Says
that my brother and I should feel things
like blessed and lucky because in a world
where everyone’s parents are splitting
up, they’ve somehow managed to stick
together. When they kiss, it brings the
sun. It is not perfect, my parents’ marriage,
but for them it works.

We don’t mention how my father almost
moved out two years ago, how whenever
they get into a fight it splits up the house
like a checkerboard. We don’t mention that
sometimes my mother will go into their
bedroom and cry after he’s yelled at her.
We never say how mom has said before
that she “can’t stand that man”, how I’ve
caught her on several occasions flipping
through travel magazines, that she stashes
pictures of beaches and mountain ranges
under her pillow like she’s eleven again,
waiting for the tooth fairy.

I figure that some things must work for a
reason, that sometimes it’s the things that
you don’t say instead of the things that you
do. My father tells me that he hopes my
marriage will be just like his, but I’m not
eleven anymore, dad, and the tooth fairy
has never existed. I still remember my
mother coming into my room that night I
lost my front tooth and prying it out of my
hand in exchange for a dollar. We measure
love in teeth, in dollars, in children. Marriage
is just a race to see who can make the other
cry first. It is baby teeth in a child’s fist.

even when you pull your skin apart
to show him all the filth that
runs in your veins,

all those nights
when your collarbones
don’t show as much
as the girl’s down the street
with her pale white skin
and her eyes as blue as

it turns dark
and he loves you
even when he tastes those tears
like cold milk,
sour, lingering,
running down his throat.

In that man
is a boy who still can’t quite
find the right words
to tell you how much he loves you
and why
but that boy is just as much a shout
as he is a whisper
and he sees you when you
come down the steps,
in that willowy dress
you wear to hide your curves
and in his eyes,
no one shines as bright as you
in black.

There is a boy
and in your eyes,
he is human,
even though Mother says
